"Split & Glued By Vincent C. Marinaro” is the inscription Vince put on each of his fly rods and serves as the title for this new work. Harms and Whittle analyze Marinaro’s rods and account for his path to becoming a maker of bamboo fly rods--his design criteria and building practices.

Vince Marinaro has long been acclaimed as one of Pennsylvania’s most influential fly-fishermen and authors--a career that was both extensive and varied. In addition to presenting local lore within the Cumberland Valley, Harms and Whittle connect Marinaro’s life and times to the larger world of fly-fishing and the history of bamboo rod-making.

This publication was prepared by the authors in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Museum Association and the Marinaro Estate, with a portion of the proceeds to be returned to benefit the museum.

Produced in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Museum Association.

Split & Glued, a new book on Vince Marinaro, his life, his influence & his bamboo rod-building legacy, is well under way, with a final draft close to completion. "This is exactly the type of fly fishing books we'd like to see more of," said editor & publisher, John Taylor.

Split & Glued looks at Marinao, his influence on angling, stream (including the LeTort), entomology & fish habits, his founding of the Fly Fisher's Club of Harrisburg, his connections with well-known Catskill & Michigan anglers, his friendship with President Jimmy Carter & his international fishing on the river Itchen & Test. Several chapters will also be devoted to Marinaro's bamboo rod building, an inside look at his techniques & tools, and specifically the convex taper. This unique blend of angling legend, history & technica looks to make a great book.

Fly fishermen, bamboo rod makers and collectors and those fascinated with fly fishing's history will want to keep tabs on an exciting new Book about Vince Marinaro, his life, his influence and his bamboo rod-building legacy. Produced in cooperation vith the Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Museum Association (PFFMA), this very special book is possible because of the special relationship of these authors to Vince Marinaro and his legacy.

More than a quarter-century ago Marinaro taught the now retired Dickinson College English professor Bill Harms his rod-building techniques and principles, let him cast his bamboo rods—knowledge and experiences not shared with anyone else, said Harms, particularly Vlarinaro's rod-building data. Co-author and photographer Tom Whittle was trained in bamboo fly rod crafting by George Maurer, author of Fundamentals of Building a Bamboo Fly-Rod.

Split and Glued
focuses on Marinaro's bamboo rob building interests while also providing biographical and historical information about Marinaro, as well as his influence on angling, streams (including the LeTort), entomology and fish habits, his founding of the Fly Fisher's Zlub of Harrisburg, his connections with well-known Catskill and Michigan anglers, his friendship with President Jimmy Carter and his international fishing on the rivers Itchen and Test.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Bill Harms & Tom Whittle
devote several chapters to an inside look at Marinaro's bamboo rod building techniques and tools, as well as Harms' experience as Vlarinaro's student. Specifically, Marinaro's convex taper design concepts—the core of his rod-building—is discussed. The book shares several select examples of Marinaro's tapers, and a final segment of the book focuses on casting evaluations of these fine bamboo rods, with photographs of the rods and their flexing characteristics. The authors, who base their own rod designs on the convex taper approach, share some of their own tapers.

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR:
Kim Mellema,
artist and bamboo rod enthusiast provides other illustrative materials. Illustrations and photographs include previously unpublished working drawings as well as personal photos from and of Marinaro. A graduate of SUNY Buffalo, she has been an artist and teacher for the last 15 years.
